Water level dropped – Lake Garda: hydrofoils can no longer run

Date:

Due to the drought of recent months, the level of Lake Garda has fallen so much that hydrofoils can no longer operate. Therefore, only catamarans are now used.

Hydrofoils are being replaced by catamarans, as this is a type of vessel with a shallow draft that, thanks to its characteristics, can sail even at low tide.

“We are confident that this solution will enable the regular operation of scheduled services as planned,” said Giuseppe Mafale, operations manager of the Lake Garda Navigation Company. The timetable for some routes has changed.

Italy is suffering from the drought
All the major northern Italian lakes are suffering from the drought of these months. The location of Lake Garda is better than that of Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, whose level has fallen sharply. In early July, a state of emergency was declared in five northern Italian regions because of the drought that had persisted for months. This will provide financial support to farmers and ranchers who are particularly hard hit by water shortages.
