After splashing in the river, two dogs died in the district of Bruck an der Leitha (Lower Austria) and others became ill. A vet then sounded the alarm. Now the water is analyzed in detail by specialists in the laboratory.
The oppressive heat of the past weekend drew numerous dog owners from Sommerein and neighboring towns and their barking darlings to the banks of the Leitha. There the four-legged friends could splash in the shallow water to their heart’s content.
But the fun had tragic consequences: two dogs died after being cooled, at least ten more suffered from symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. “Such cases have been reported by three veterinary practices in the area,” explains Dr. Bettina May, veterinarian from Sommerein. The two deaths were caused by acute liver inflammation, the expert explains: “In all cases, the affected dogs showed symptoms five to 10 hours after contact with the water.” May warned via Facebook.
Authorities became active on Monday – water samples were taken from the affected part of the river, as Dominik Lappel, deputy district governor in Bruck an der Leitha, confirmed. These are being examined in a laboratory, but the results are not expected until next week.
