Attention, feisty dolphin: Authorities in the Japanese city of Fukui are currently calling on bathers on a beach to be more careful, as several swimmers have already been bitten. A sign on the beach has been advising visitors since Wednesday to stay as far away as possible and not to touch the animal. In addition, a device was installed to keep the dolphin away using ultrasound.
According to local media reports, lifeguards have reported at least 10 cases of swimmers being bitten by dolphins since the bathing season officially started on July 9. Injuries are minor so far, but authorities have warned of potentially more serious injuries. They assume that one animal is behind the attacks.
“Dolphins are considered cute, but wild dolphins can fight back and bite if approached carelessly,” Fukui police said. “Dolphins don’t like to be touched on certain parts of their bodies, such as the tip of their nose and dorsal fin,” said city tourism officer Masaki Yasui. He referred to videos on social networks of beachgoers touching the animals in those exact places. “We recommend that visitors view the dolphin from a distance.”
