Normally, billionaire and Microsoft founder Bill Gates addresses humanity’s big questions on his blog – such as pandemics, social inequality or climate change. But Gates also publishes private stuff time and time again. In the latest article, he explains a new trend sport in the US that Gates has been passionate about for over 50 years. In the video, he clarifies, “I’m a pickler!”
The brisk sport of “pickleball” is currently all the rage in the US – much to the surprise of Bill Gates, for whom the current trend sport has been an enjoyable source of exercise for 50 years. Gates: “I’ve been a ‘pickler’ for over 50 years – that’s what they call people who are obsessed with the game like me.”
Gates’ father was a friend of the inventors
Gates reveals that 50 years ago he played Pickleball with his parents, who were friends with the inventors. His family was really good at sports – so good that the Gates family was surprised when they were beaten.
“Pickleball” – a cross between tennis, table tennis and badminton – was actually invented in the mid-1960s in the Seattle area where Gates is from. Gates recalls that his father was a friend of inventors Bill Bell, Barney McCallum and Joel Pritchard and took the sport home with him.
Known only in Seattle for decades, “Pickleball” is now becoming a nationwide phenomenon in the US. That does not surprise the “early adopter” Gates. “It’s easy to learn, it’s fun. But it also requires a lot of concentration.” For him, it’s clear: “Win or lose, I can’t imagine a better way to spend a summer’s day.”
