On the 69th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire, President Kim Jong-un warns Washington and Seoul
North Korea adds a new level to an already remarkable tension. The Asian country’s president, Kim Jong-un, assured yesterday that he was “prepared” and “willing” to deploy his nuclear arsenal in any military confrontation with the United States and South Korea. On the 69th anniversary of the ceasefire of the Korean War (1950-1953), dubbed “Victory Day,” the Pyongyang leader claimed to have “capable weapons and fully ready to respond to all crises,” noting that he ” was in a position to mobilize fully and quickly with precision our own troops with a nuclear deterrent vocation.”
The president warned his South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol about his comments about a “preemptive strike” in the face of Pyongyang’s ballistic provocations. “If they make such a dangerous attempt, there will be immediate retaliation from powerful forces and the Yoon government and its armies will be destroyed,” he warned.
He also devoted a few words to the United States. If Washington continues to “damage” Pyongyang’s image and threaten its security and interests, “it will have to resign itself to bigger concerns and crises,” Kim Jong-un emphasized.
Last June, the US and Seoul threatened a “rapid” response with more sanctions and even a review of “military stance” in the event of another nuclear test by North Korea. And it is Washington this week held exercises on South Korean soil for the first time since 2019.
