In Brazil alone, 337 people were officially released from conditions similar to slave labor in July alone. According to reports, the rescue operations in the countryside were mainly carried out during harvesting, coffee growing and livestock farming. In cities, rescues of drug rehabilitation clinic workers and cases of domestic workers have attracted particular attention.
According to a statement from the Attorney General in Brasilia, workers in the metropolitan district and 22 other states were rescued in a joint operation by six public authorities.
Last year, 128 people in Brazil were freed from conditions similar to slave labor, prosecutors said. Slave labor “is not a fiction, but a reality that must be abolished,” the news portal quoted “G1” as Deputy Attorney General Carlos Frederico.
Nearly half of the more than 10.5 million slaves shipped to the Americas went to Brazil. Although slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888, it still has an impact.
