At least eight people were killed in a fire in a high-rise building in southeastern Moscow on Friday evening. Four others were injured and taken to hospital, investigators said. The fire broke out on the ground floor of the 15-storey building that housed a hostel, according to emergency services.
The smoke detector didn’t work and bars on the windows prevented people from escaping. More than 200 people were taken to safety. According to the Russian news agency TASS, all eight fatalities are apparently migrants whose nationalities have yet to be clarified.
Fire broke out on the first floor
It was initially unclear whether it concerned housing for foreign workers. According to the reports, citing the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the fire broke out on the ground floor of the building. Then the flames would have spread into three rooms and a corridor totaling 150 square meters.
Russian judicial authorities are investigating ignoring security requirements. Shortcomings in this area had already been identified during audit visits in 2019 and in June this year. Criminal proceedings have been initiated due to insufficient security measures, it is said.
