About 50 Fridays For Future activists demonstrated Friday evening in front of the Vienna OMV headquarters in Leopoldstadt. “Decades of mismanagement in energy policy have pushed us right into the middle of the energy and climate crisis. Many of the disasters were foreseeable, but the government and OMV preferred to play with Russian gas,” says Klara Butz of Fridays For Future Vienna.
According to Fridays For Future, OMV has massively increased Austria’s reliance on Russia over the past decade and further exacerbated the climate crisis. “It is time for OMV to drastically change its business strategy and be part of the turning point. The era of fossils must finally be a thing of the past,” it sounds in a broadcast.
More demos planned
The demo on Friday marked the start of a “climate blocker tour” that saw activists strike every two weeks for institutions “that have played a key role in driving Austria’s climate and energy crises and continue to vehemently oppose climate protection”. According to the Land Police headquarters in Vienna, there were 50 people at the premiere who participated in the recorded demonstration for about an hour from 7 p.m. and there were no incidents. The final of the tour is the global climate strike on September 23.
