In Italy, 14 tons of food with a commercial value of approximately EUR 327,000 were seized as part of a large-scale campaign against Listeria. 23 businesses were temporarily closed. This is the result of an inspection campaign by the responsible Carabinieri unit and the Ministry of Health after Listeria poisoning.
The carabinieri announced that the controls mainly checked raw or undercooked foods (such as sausages). The investigations would be aimed at verifying proper safety and hygiene management in companies that produce food of animal origin, it said.
Specifically, 1,095 companies were surveyed that are most susceptible to contamination with Listeria bacteria, such as fresh-filled dairy and delicatessen products that are packaged and shipped to wholesalers and vending machines.
Advertisements against 310 entrepreneurs
Irregularities were found in no fewer than 335 establishments, which corresponds to approximately 30 percent of the companies inspected. 310 entrepreneurs were reported and 541 criminal and administrative violations were identified. Fines of EUR 365,000 were imposed.
