The student from Vienna, who was sentenced to three years in prison in Egypt at the beginning of July, is released. Ahmed Samir Santawy has been found guilty of spreading fake news on social media. Now he and six other inmates must be released by way of a release order.
Santawy is a student at the Central European University (CEU) in Vienna and was arrested during a home visit in February 2021. The 31-year-old researched women’s rights and abortion rights. In early July, a Cairo court sentenced him to three years in prison. Human rights activists saw the student’s investigation as the reason for the conviction. Amnesty, the CEU and the Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) campaigned for Santawy’s release.
timing unclear
As the “Standard” (Online) reported Saturday, citing Egyptian news website “Madr Masr,” Santawy will be released from prison by presidential decree. It was not yet clear when the 31-year-old should be released. The detained student’s lawyer said he is still waiting for a signed copy of the presidential directive, according to Madr Masr.
