Long waiting times – holiday traffic in France causes 800 km of traffic jam

Date:

In France, holiday traffic on Saturday caused crowds, especially on highways towards the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coast. Around noon, the vehicles were stuck in traffic jams throughout the country for more than 800 kilometers, the responsible authority reports on its website.

According to the operator Vinci, drivers on Autobahn 7 south through the Rhone Valley sometimes had to plan more than five hours instead of about 90 minutes for the journey from Lyon to Orange.

During the weekend between the two holiday months of July and August, there is traditionally a lot to do in France on the major traffic routes. Because then many holidaymakers leave at the same time for the holiday resorts in the south of the country, while others drive back home after their holiday.

Last year even 1000 kilometers of traffic jam
The French even have a nickname for this phenomenon: “le grand chassé-croisé” (roughly: the great coming and going). This Saturday, however, there were slightly fewer traffic jams than on the last Saturday of July last year, when the traffic jam peaked at more than 1000 kilometers.
