After weeks of fires in a grain silo in the Lebanese capital Beirut, the warehouse has now collapsed. Photos and videos of the collapse circulated on social media.
Authorities have been warning of a collapse for days. The fire was traced to fermented grain in the damaged granary, which had caught fire in the summer heat. Economic Affairs Minister Amin Salam said in mid-July that a solution to the fire is being worked on. The area was cordoned off.
Symbol of memory of devastating catastrophe
On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion occurred in the port of Beirut. At that time, more than 190 people died and about 6,000 were injured. The harbor and large parts of the adjacent residential areas were destroyed. Experts suspect that the silos absorbed some of the force of the massive explosion, preventing even greater damage. The relatives of the victims want to keep the silos as a symbol of memory – at least until the investigation into the blast is completed. But now it was different.
