Advice, appliance replacement – new financing campaign for energy savings in the household

Date:

For four years, low-income households will receive an annual subsidy of 30 million euros for advice on energy conservation and replacement of large, energy-intensive electrical appliances.

A new refrigerator can save up to 100 euros annually, said Environment Minister and coalition partner Leonore Gewessler (Greens) at the presentation of the financing campaign that started on Thursday with Caritas and the climate and energy fund.

It concerns “easily implemented energy-saving measures, simple topics such as ventilation and sealing of windows and doors, simple tips that do not require large investments”. 400 employees of Caritas and Volkshilfe have been trained for the project.

“Energy is a valuable commodity”
According to Gewessler, this would specifically support those families most affected by inflation, because “energy is a valuable commodity” but is also a basic need.

If the advice for replacing the appliance follows from the consultation, this is planned as a free third step: It takes one to four weeks before the appliance dealer, for example, professionally installs the said new refrigerator and disposes of the old appliance .

“Don’t have to leave Austria to see a need”
Caritas president Landau referred to the significant social consequences of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and inflation, which he had only recently seen in Ukraine and Moldova: “Children, families and the elderly suffer particularly, but we must not even leave Austria to see need .” He recalled 713,000 people who cannot adequately heat their homes for financial reasons – twice as many as normal.
