Towards Lebanon – First ship with grain leaves Ukraine

Date:

The first ship loaded with corn since the grain deal between Russia and Ukraine left the port of Odessa early Monday morning. The cargo ship “Razoni” is on its way to Lebanon, according to the Turkish Defense Ministry. Meanwhile, Ukraine accuses Russia of firing missiles at the Black Sea region of Odessa. In addition, there were alleged bomb attacks on the city and the Mykolaiv region.

The city of Odessa was shelled from the Crimean peninsula with two Russian “Iskander” missiles, the local city council said on Sunday. The bullets would have hit a quarry. No information was given about possible casualties and there was initially no official response to the allegations from Moscow.

Three ports are part of the agreement
The Odessa region of southern Ukraine is home to all three ports that will resume grain exports across the Black Sea as a result of a recent deal between Russia and Ukraine. The ship “Razoni”, which sails under the flag of Sierra Leone, departed at 7.30 am (CEST) on Monday. It is on its way to Lebanon, on its way to the state where a ship with barley has already arrived. In this case, however, Kiev had accused Moscow of stealing grain.

More will follow after the grain export on Monday. According to Ukrainian information, more than 20 million tons of grain from last year’s harvest are still waiting to be exported. This year’s crop will be only half as high as last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy estimated. In his daily video speech on Monday evening, he also spoke about Russian shelling of the city and region of Mykolaiv. “Today one of the most brutal bombings (…) took place. No Russian attack goes unanswered by our military and intelligence officials,” Zelenskyy said.

Grain trader killed in attack
The owner of Ukraine’s largest grain trading company, Oleksiy Vadaturskyi, and his wife Rajissa are said to have been killed in the attack on Mykolaiv on Sunday night. According to Ukraine, it has launched successful counter-offensives in Kherson, and Moscow has already moved some of its troops from the east to the south. Specifically, according to Selenskyi, this applies to Kherson and Zaporizhzhya.
