Too few donations – refugee aid: what is desperately needed!

Date:

In the first weeks of the war, donations for Ukraine reached record levels – also in Austria. After 160 days it looks different. At the humanitarian arrival center in Leopoldstadt in Vienna, the helpers of “Train of Hope” complain that there is a marked flattening – there is a lack of volunteers on site and donations in kind for the care of people and animals.

On February 24, 2022, the war in Ukraine began with the invasion of Russian troops. Since then, millions of people have fled and depended on humanitarian aid. Since March 3, 2022, refugees from the war zone have been received by volunteers of the association “Train of Hope” in the arrival center of Vienna at Engerthstrasse 269. In addition to civil society, support from schools, clubs (including our “Krone” animal corner), artists , many companies have also made generous donations on the spot.

Aid for emergency aid Ukraine remains important
Even though war reporting has sadly become “everyday life” after 160 days, arriving refugees as well as thousands of Ukrainians already in our country still need support. On the homepage of the ÖIF (Austrian Integration Fund) war refugees can find adequate help in their national language.

Basic care is not enough
There is no other aid center in Vienna like the humanitarian arrival center in Leopoldstadt. Weeks later, Ukrainian citizens currently living in the federal capital continue to return to the “Train of Hope” helpers on Engerthstrasse to pick up products for their daily needs – because these people can’t get over paying for basic services. The willingness of the population to donate has leveled off. Then there are the current price increases, which affect everyone. For those who can help, you will find a list of needs below.

These people have not fled to our country to take advantage of our social system, but because the war in their homeland has taken everything from them. You don’t even want to imagine how awful it must be when people you love are called to the front and you don’t know if you’ll see them again. Or when bombs destroy your own home in minutes and you’re left with nothing but what you’re wearing – and these are exactly the people who need help! These are the people who ask for the possible at the arrival center in Vienna.
