Many arrests – emergency aid for police officers at the border demanded

Date:

The Federal Office for Asylum would have to step in to cope with the work. The police travel hundreds of kilometers every week to bring the detainees to the federal states.

As reported, an internal letter from the executive in western Austria sparked violent reactions, according to which “the processing capacity at the border in Burgenland is no longer sufficient at the moment”.

Application in Tyrol
The result: applications from more than 200 asylum seekers in other federal states had to be processed over the weekend. In 40 cases, the applications from refugees were forwarded to, for example, Tyrol. Given the highest number of detentions since the refugee crisis in 2015, the registration of all newly arrived migrants could not be managed by officials in Burgenland alone.

Because it takes a lot of time. The scope of work extends from the initial questioning of the refugees to logging their applications in the BTP system for asylum procedures. “On average, 60 to 90 minutes should be allowed for the handling of a single case.”

50 officers sent to Burgenland
With nearly 600 arrests made in just one day, it is not possible for the current staff to allay concerns, according to the ranks of the executive branch. The Ministry of the Interior had already sent more than 50 police officers to their colleagues in Burgenland to reinforce them.

“This is too little. 150 officials are needed”, criticize SPÖ-related staff representatives. But even that some union members would not be satisfied with it. They are urging the Federal Office for Asylum to take on the task at least partly on its own. “This authority is responsible for this work, not the police,” it emphasizes.

More and more attacks
In any case, the burden will likely continue to grow. The attacks have been increasing for months. While 549 refugees were reported in Burgenland in the last seven days of April, the number rose to 2029 and 2424 in the past two weeks – and the trend is increasing!
