Gerald Zenker fought for a long time for a heart station at the state hospital in Bruck an der Mur in Styria. Now the renowned special division could meet its end. In the “Krone” interview, the top doctor is shocked.
“crown”: After a good success story of 20 years, the heart station is now threatened with the end: there are considerations to reduce the LKH Bruck to conservative subjects and to bundle all operational services in Leoben. What do you make of it?
Gerald Zenker: The Brucker Heart Center with cardiology, neurology and vascular surgery is a Styrian lighthouse project for one of the most common diseases of our time. In Bruck, we treat up to 600 cardiac emergencies a year, that’s more than two a day. We also have nephrology here with the largest dialysis station in Styria. I don’t know how to make up for these losses. But apparently our healthcare system needs to collapse completely before those responsible wake up.
