Eugene Finney (46) miraculously escaped a shark attack in California (USA) with only minor injuries. But at the hospital, doctors discovered a deadly tumor…
Finney was swimming in the Pacific Ocean off Huntington Beach, California, when he was suddenly rammed from behind with elemental force: “It was like a window frame with rocks slammed against me. I had never felt such extreme pain.”
Finney dragged himself to the beach. On his back were “only” a cut and two smaller wounds. But because he had trouble breathing and severe chest pain, his girlfriend took him to the hospital.
cracked rib
As a precaution, the emergency doctor performed a computed tomography in the stomach and back region. It revealed that the patient had a severe back contusion and a broken rib from the shark attack – but these were not a major medical problem.
Kidney carcinoma discovered
But the black shadow the doctor saw when he looked at the scan on Finney’s kidney did. It turned out to be a particularly aggressive early-stage cancer. The surgeons then had to remove a quarter of his kidney.
That was seven years ago. Even today, Finney is still completely tumor free. But his doctors are sure of one thing: Without the shark attack in 2015, the 46-year-old most likely wouldn’t be alive.
