The death of 13-year-old Leonie, who was found lifeless by passers-by on a green belt in Vienna-Donaustadt at the end of June 2021, will be heard from the regional criminal court from September 27. Three young men of Afghan descent, aged between 19 and 23, have previously been charged with deadly rape and serious sexual abuse of minors.
After the youngest met the girl on the Danube Canal, the 13-year-old went to a compatriot’s apartment, where, according to the charges, the group decided to put them under the influence of drugs with the intention of abusing them. First, the 13-year-old is said to have voluntarily taken an ecstasy tablet, according to the prosecutor, seven more tablets were then dissolved in the apartment and given to her in a drink. When the ecstasy started to take effect, the 13-year-old was allegedly assaulted by all three suspects.
Drug intoxication and suffocation
The 13-year-old suddenly stopped breathing due to the excessive amount of narcotics she was given. The men must have panicked. They tried to give her tea and lemon and to shower her with cold water. When the 13-year-old stopped moving, they carried her out the door and leaned her against the tree. The autopsy report revealed that the girl died a violent death as a result of drug intoxication and suffocation.
Seven days of negotiation
The suspects deny the allegations against them. It is claimed that he did not even notice what happened because he lost consciousness after consuming a mixed drink. According to the Public Prosecution Service, however, numerous tracks refute this information.
A total of seven days of negotiations are planned for the trial, with verdicts expected on October 6. For the oldest defendant, who was over 21 at the time of the crime and thus an adult, a sentence would mean ten to twenty years or life. The other two should allow for up to 20 years.
