Charges against accomplices – terror in Vienna: plans rolled over while they were still in prison

Date:

The charges against six suspected accomplices to the Vienna terror attack span 117 pages. They are suspected of involvement in terrorist offenses involving murder.

The main perpetrator of the terror attack in the center of Vienna is dead, shot by the emergency services. And yet Kujtim F. is the linchpin of the 117-page indictment, which will now bring six accomplices before a jury. The start of the trial has not yet been determined, mainly because the accused and their lawyers can still object to the charges.

Fellow inmates asked for weapons
The suspect is now the 24-year-old who was already in custody together with the later murderer. 22 months because of a terrorist organization – they had spread IS propaganda and wanted to go to Syria. Despite being convicted and given support for deradicalisation, they held on to their beliefs – and allegedly rolled out plans for attacks while still in prison! According to the indictment, the killer asked a fellow inmate how he could get a weapon – for an attack on Stephansplatz!

After his release, Kujtim F. contacted a childhood friend – also convicted of Islamist ideas. He visited him in prison, he is accused of having links with arms dealers.

Reconstructed hours before the attack
A 28-year-old Afghan, who even moved in with the killer, is said to have been particularly active in supporting the terror plans. The Public Prosecution Service has accurately reconstructed the hours before the attack – with visits from like-minded people, posting a suicide note on Instagram, where the act was announced. More visitors came – they all would have seen or even helped when Kujtim F. strapped on the dummy explosives, loaded the rapid-fire rifle and reset his cell phone to factory settings.

Defenders question involvement
For lawyer Rudolf Mayer – he is defending two of the suspects – these are all just clues: “But you also need a closed chain of evidence that allows no other conclusion that they were actually involved in the terrible act. I don’t see that.” Colleague Elmar Kresbach speaks of “lack of evidence”.

The process will probably have the highest level of security…
