For many Styrian women, sexual violence is a sad part of party nights. However, less than ten percent of incidents are reported. Ina Mastnak is director of the Tara Advice Center and knows why. Charlotte Melassardi, a 19-year-old student, wants to take countermeasures out of her own concern.
A passing gesture, pushy flirting or even an unpleasant look – “every woman knows that,” says Ina Mastnak. We are talking about sexual violence and harassment, with more than 50 percent of the latter taking place in public spaces, Mastnak explains. As director of the Graz advice center Tara, she can confirm the figures based on hard practice. Women who have experienced attacks in bars or on the way home – or even been victims of knockout drops – contact her. The shocking thing: “It can affect anyone, there is no typical victim,” says Mastnak.
