After overcoming an inappropriate interruption at the end of his cycle, Davis Riley shot a -6 Friday, with no bogeys, to lead the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.
Riley entered the weekend with a -10two strokes ahead of Pierceson Coody and Hayden Buckley who, with 65 strokes apiece, are in second place at 8 under par.
After racking up five of his six birdies in a six-hole stretch midway through his round, Riley hit 3 feet for par on his final hole, the par-4 ninth – when play was suspended due to a weather situation at the Colonial Country Club.
The delay officially lasted one hour and nine minutes. Riley used the time before returning to the green to hit his par putt.
Riley made birdies on the 15th and 16th holes before holding three more on Nos. 18, 1 and 2. He finished his performance for the day by holing his approach on the par-4 6th hole, three yards away, and then holed the putt from right to left.
Riley’s only PGA Tour victory came last year at the Zurich Classic, the team event in New Orleans, with Nick Hardy. This year he missed seven of the 14 cuts coming to Colonial.
The number 1 in the world, Scottie Scheffler is in danger of missing the cut after opening at -2. He did better on Friday, when he made four birdies in a row to sign a card of 65 strokes, without a bogey, and stand with a total of -3.
Among the players who didn’t make the cut were Harris English (+3), Colombian Camilo Villegas (+4) and Max Homa (+7).
