A 19-year-old IS sympathizer remained silent in the Vienna Regional Court, but the accusations speak for themselves. It is said that in addition to posting material glorifying IS, he has also “committed numerous acts of violence”: he stormed a Viennese bakery disguised with an empty pistol.
IS sympathizer and violent: a dangerous combination that is now bringing a 19-year-old to justice in Vienna. Flanked by prison guards in full gear, the lanky Bosnian is led to the interrogation room. His tame demeanor could not have been more at odds with the terrifying accusation.
Instagram page run with propaganda
The young man is said not only to have forwarded the terrorist organization’s propaganda material to private individuals, he also had an account on Instagram and shared relevant videos and photos there. “The profile photo of the account already depicted an IS fighter,” the prosecutor explains. He obtained the content from the official IS media agency. So there is no doubt that they are glorifying, the prosecutor explains to the jury.
Fired an empty gun in a bakery
But he not only shared the violence against innocent people on social media, he also committed it himself – from May 22 of the previous year: Together with a friend, the 19-year-old punched and kicked a homeless man at the Floridsdorf train station. The man suffered, among other things, a bruised skull. Same crime scene, different victim: Three days later they pointed a blank pistol at an ÖBB employee (31).
Just four days later, the suspect marched into a nearby bakery wearing a mask with the weapon in question pointed at the vendor and pulled the trigger. Fortunately, the shot didn’t hit anyone, but the bakery worker did get tinnitus and an off-duty police officer got banged…
“Somehow he was in completely the wrong circles at the time,” the lawyer tries to explain the excessively violent behavior of her young client. He now has the support of his family and friends and the promise that he will work as soon as he gets out of prison. The IS sympathizer himself only says ‘guilty’ and remains silent about the allegations.
Deradicalization and partial imprisonment
He doesn’t even have to talk; the 19-year-old’s victims paint a clear picture. For terrorist organization and various violent crimes, he received a three-year partial prison sentence, including one year in prison. He must also undergo a deradicalization program.
