Man who hunts spiders causes Utah wildfire

Date:

In the US state of Utah, a man tried to kill a spider with a lighter – and started a wildfire. The 26-year-old was arrested on charges of negligent arson and possession of marijuana, police said.

As police reported, Cory Allan M. has been temporarily arrested but has since been released on bail.

The 26-year-old told police at the scene that he tried to kill the spider with a lighter and “started a fire,” the Utah Sheriff’s Office said.

The state of Utah – like much of the American Southwest – is experiencing severe drought. The fire, which broke out Tuesday near the town of Springville, south of Utah’s capital Salt Lake City, expanded to more than 24 acres and was 90 percent under control by Wednesday, the fire department said.
