As a new US study reveals, children and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 are well protected against the pathogen after the third dose of the corona vaccination. This increases the protection rate against the course of a disease with the need to go to an emergency room or immediate medical intervention to 87 percent.
Sara Tarof and her co-authors at Kaiser Permanente Health Insurance in California analyzed data from 3,168 adolescents regarding immunization coverage after two or three doses of Covid-19. The benchmark was the frequency of use of emergency care or acute medical care caused by Covid-19 between November 1, 2021 and March 18, 2022. The average age of the subjects was 15 years. The vaccine used was the Pfizer/BioNTech mRNA vaccine.
Protection after two vaccinations disappears quickly
The results: Two vaccinations led to 89 percent fewer cases of acute medical care due to Covid-19 after infection with the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 within the first two months after immunization. At Omikron, the protection rate was 73 percent. Up to six months after the second partial vaccination, the protective effect for infections with the delta variant was reduced to 49 percent and only 16 percent against the ommicron variant.
As the authors finally found in the study published online in the network of the American Medical Society with the information of the American health insurance company, which is known worldwide in epidemiological circles, the third partial vaccination brings decisive benefits. “A third dose of BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech mRNA vaccine; note) was associated with improved protection against omicron compared to two doses. This underlines the importance of the ‘booster’ (in Austria the third partial vaccination; note) for young people between the ages of 12 and 17,” the experts wrote. This was already the case for the first month after the third partial vaccination, in which the protection percentage 87 percent.
Basic vaccination only completed with the third sting
In principle, this also corresponds to the Austrian recommendations for all people: “The third vaccination completes the so-called basic immunization. It is necessary for the best possible vaccination protection – including protection against serious courses. For people with a healthy immune system, a third vaccination is recommended from the age of five, six months after the second vaccination.”
