After storms in Tyrol – mudslides and volumes of water made for long operations

Date:

The violent storms that raged over parts of Tyrol on Friday evening ended relatively mildly. No one was injured except for one firefighter. But mudslides and blockades caused many hours of work for emergency services, especially in the Innsbruck-Land district and Schwaz. Interim roadblocks have been lifted.

“Land under” was the motto from one minute to the next Friday afternoon in many parts of Tyrol. Heavy rainfall – as reported – caused mudslides and flooded streets and cellars. Numerous emergency calls kept the emergency services on their toes, as the Tyrol control center confirms: “We cannot say anything about the exact number yet. However, there were increased deployments in the upper Zillertal from Zell and Mayrhofen, also in the Sellraintal.

Several mudslides in parts of Tyrol
Already in the early afternoon a thunderstorm with heavy rain led to the first missions in the Sellraintal. In St. Sigmund, the stream burst its banks and buried the Sellraintal Strae in the “Brandner Höfe” area. The cleanup work continued into the early hours. In Ranggen, just a few kilometers away, there was also a mudslide. Fortunately, no one was injured in either case.

A new mudslide and numerous floods also forced the emergency services in the Zillertal to leave. In Gerlos, several streams overflowed and covered parts of Gerlosstrasse. The road maintenance department in Zell am Ziller and the volunteer fire brigade were deployed to pump out the water masses. There is no word yet on the extent of damage to the buildings. No one was injured.

Firefighter injured
In Umhausen in the Ötztal (Imst district) lightning struck a pine tree in rugged terrain below the Narrenkogel around 4 p.m. and set it on fire. Firefighters ground crews have been helicoptered to the scene for extinguishing work, in which a 32-year-old firefighter injured his leg with a chainsaw while extinguishing the blaze. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Almost all roadblocks lifted
The affected roads were blocked by the mudslides. However, these were lifted after the first clean-up work. There are currently still obstacles on the Sellrainstrasse between St. Sigmund and Kühtai. However, the border crossing at Staller Sattel in East Tyrol is closed. The reason is storm damage on the Italian side.
