A dangerous incident occurred at Lake Traunsee in Upper Austria: a 61-year-old sailor was thrown into the lake from the tree of his boat. Because he was not wearing a life jacket, he was in danger of drowning. But then a witness came to the rescue.
A 61-year-old from Ohlsdorf went sailing with his sailboat on the Traunsee on Saturday afternoon. Shortly after 4pm he moved from bow to stern on the boat after work on the headsail area. The boat jibes into the wind, causing the boat’s boom to skip to the other side of the boat.
hit by tree
This tumble surprised the man, who was thrown overboard from the tree. The sailboat continued into the wind under its own power. The sailor was not injured, but floated in the lake about 800 meters from the shore. He was dressed in a jacket, shorts and shoes and started swimming towards the shore.
After a short while he lost his strength and called for help to draw attention to his emergency. A 42-year-old passer-by from the Gmunden neighborhood, which was on the Toscana peninsula, noticed the 61-year-old in the lake and immediately called the police. He then jumped into the water and swam toward the sailor.
The police also came to the rescue
Police officers from Gmunden immediately rushed to the rescue with the police boat. Officials from the PI Altmünster went from the country to the Tuscan peninsula. Meanwhile, the 42-year-old reached the sailor and tried to pin him down or swim to shore with him. However, due to the exhaustion of the sailor, this was only possible with difficulty and the helper also went to the physical limit.
Sailors and rescuers totally exhausted
After a few minutes, the police officers reached the two totally exhausted people about 300 meters from the shore and pulled them aboard the police boat. They were then taken to the Toscana Peninsula, where the self-propelled sailboat had also drifted ashore. The two men were unharmed, but were physically exhausted.
