The Ukrainian army is coming under increasing pressure in the eastern region of Donetsk but, according to its own statements, initially repulsed all Russian advances. Since conquering the neighboring region of Lugansk, the Russians have concentrated their attacks in Donbass on Donetsk, where they have captured about 60 percent of the territory so far. Against this background, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked for new Western weapons and at the same time thanked them for the weapons supplied so far.
“Any attack on the enemy’s ammunition depots, on their command posts and on Russian technology stocks saves all our lives, the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians,” he said.
Need more weapons
Selenskyj thanked Western partners for previous arms deliveries. He referred in particular to the United States, which a few days ago announced further arms deliveries to Ukraine for an amount of $550 million. This should include ammunition for Himar’s multiple rocket launcher system and 75,000 artillery shells. At the same time, Zelenskyj asked for further military assistance.
Ukraine fends off Russian offensives
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian General Staff said in its evening report that Russian offensives to the cities of Sloviansk, Bakhmut and Avdiivka had been repulsed. Heavy fighting has been raging for days, especially in Bakhmut. The town is considered a cornerstone of the defense system surrounding the last Ukrainian-owned metropolitan area in Donbass. Should Bakhmut and other smaller towns fall, the way would be largely clear for Russian troops towards the major cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
