Members of the mountain rescue service in Carinthia sound the alarm. More and more properties threaten to become illegal landfills. During their patrols in nature, the mountain rangers come across scrap metal and other bulky waste that is stored in forests and meadows. The perpetrators thus violate several rules at the same time, including the Nature and Cityscape Act.
Car wrecks, tires, furniture and more
The mountain rangers have their hands full at the moment, especially around Klagenfurt and along the Wörthersee. This year they had to complain about some private property that was extremely neglected. The voluntary environmental activists keep encountering enormous amounts of waste such as car wrecks, car tires, furniture and broken garden tools. “In addition, there are buildings that have already partially collapsed, the grass grows meters high,” reports district manager Wilfried Kilzer.

“Such neglect is often caused by tenants, but also endless inheritance issues,” Kilzer says. Especially in long probate cases, no one takes care of the property or the house. Kilzer: “And then foreigners also have the guts to dump their waste there illegally.” They risk severe penalties.
