On August 11, incredible scenes unfolded on the A8 near Meggenhofen, with several motorists turning around in the traffic jam and fleeing via the hard shoulder. The police investigation into the case has now been completed. There are fewer advertisements than initially thought.
“Reckless and irresponsible behavior” or “This could also cost human lives” – the action of impatient motorists three weeks ago on the A8 near Meggenhofen caused a lot of outrage among “Krone” readers.
According to eyewitness reports, around 50 motorists in a traffic jam on the motorway are said to have turned their vehicles around and fled as ghost drivers via the hard shoulder – as reported by the ‘Krone’. However, the legal consequences are not as numerous as the indignant reactions, because some of the supposedly brazen drivers who were noticed were probably real ‘ghost drivers’ who literally disappeared into thin air.
Displayed in a single digit range
“The number of cases has decreased, 50 drivers have not been verified,” says Johann Thumfart, deputy head of the Upper Austrian State Transport Department. This means that the number of reports following the incident is in the single-digit range. Probably three or four wrong-way drivers have actually been identified. They were identified on the basis of witness statements and photos.
The perpetrators expect two reports each
The drivers now expect two tickets each, Thumfart explains: “Only special vehicles are allowed to use the hard shoulder” – fines of 70 euros or more are due. “The second, more serious offence is wrong-way driving, which requires a driving licence and additional training.”
The responsible district administration will decide on the amount of the fine, although no official reports have been received to date. According to Thumfart, the police have completed the investigation.
