The Israeli military has recovered the bodies of six hostages in the Gaza Strip, including American-Israeli citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday. The Israeli military later confirmed the deaths of six hostages.
The bodies were recovered from an underground tunnel near Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. According to an army spokesman, they were killed by the kidnappers shortly before they were discovered. The remains were to be returned to Israel.
The hostages were abducted to the Gaza Strip during the surprise attack by Hamas and fighters of the allied Islamic Jihad on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. According to Israeli information, the extremists killed 1,200 people and abducted more than 250 hostages to the Gaza Strip.
According to the local health authority, more than 40,600 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 94,000 wounded in subsequent Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
During a week-long ceasefire in late November, Hamas eventually released 105 hostages. In return, Israel released 240 Palestinian prisoners from jails.
Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s parents recently remembered their son’s fate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. On Thursday, the couple gathered with other hostage family members at the Gaza border.
‘Hersh, it’s mother.’
The families tried to reach the hostages in the Gaza Strip directly with loudspeaker announcements. “Hersh, it’s Mother,” Goldberg-Polin’s mother turned to her son. “I’m praying to God to bring you back. Right now. I love you, stay strong.”
The 23-year-old was one of 251 hostages who were abducted. About 100 hostages remain in captivity; dozens are dead, according to the Israeli military. In the photo, published in April, he wears a red shirt and sits on a plastic chair, his left arm amputated.
“I wanted to hang out with my friends, but instead I was fighting for my life with severe injuries all over my body,” he says.
