“Tasks done” – China ends maneuvers but continues to threaten

Date:

China has temporarily ended its military maneuvers around Taiwan. The People’s Liberation Army announced on Wednesday that “several tasks have been successfully completed”. At the same time, Beijing threatened a violent “reunification”.

The threats were explicit. Beijing threatened to take the island republic by military means if necessary. China will always make great efforts to achieve peaceful reunification with Taiwan, according to a white paper published by the Chinese government on the issue of Taiwan. “But we will not refrain from using force and we reserve the right to take the necessary measures,” the spokesperson said.

‘Reunification must be realized’
The use of force is the “last resort” “under compelling circumstances”. According to the Chinese leadership, no foreign interference will be tolerated in Taiwan. “We will thwart any attempt to divide our country,” he said. “The historic goal of reuniting our homeland must and will be realized.” China has repeatedly made similar threats regarding Taiwan in the past.

The crisis was triggered by a trip to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China took this as a provocation. However, Pelosi defended the trip: “Yes, it was worth it. We will not allow China to isolate Taiwan,” she said.
