A devastating explosion in the southern Indiana town of Evansville on Wednesday afternoon killed at least three people and damaged dozens of homes. According to the American media, eleven of them are so heavy that they cannot be entered or are no longer habitable for safety reasons.
The broadcaster CNN reported, citing information from the fire service, that at least 39 houses were damaged in the massive explosion. It is feared that more victims will fall under the rubble. Authorities said the cause of the explosion is under investigation.
Photos and aerial photos (see video above) of the accident site show the enormity of the destruction: walls are missing from numerous buildings, the streets are strewn with rubble.
Local fire chief Mike Connelly told the local newspaper Courier & Press that the explosion had a radius of 30 feet. Most streets in the residential area were temporarily closed due to the rescue operation.
