New measures – concrete walls against street hooligans on Kahlenberg

Date:

To slow down illegal races, the city of Vienna builds obstacles on the Kahlenberg. Because the parking lot there is one of the hotspots of the so-called roadrunner scene. 65 concrete barriers are designed to make street racing and “drifts” impossible.

During the day, numerous tourists and hikers romp in the Kahlenberg parking lot. But as soon as it gets dark, the engines roar. With screeching tires, street hooligans regularly compete in races. This disturbs, among other things, the residents who are deprived of their sleep. Besides Triester Straße, this part of Döbling is also one of the hotspots of the so-called roadrunner scene.

No more “floating” on the Kahlenberg?
Municipal Councilor for Transport Ulli Sima (SPÖ) presented new measures to stop the crowds together with District Manager Daniel Resch (ÖVP). A total of 65 concrete barriers in the parking lot are intended to prevent “drifts” (deliberately oversteering a car) and make racing impossible.

structural measures
“As a city of Vienna, we act against the roadrunner scene, for example with increased police checks. However, this is not possible 24 hours a day. That is why we are now taking structural measures here,” says alderman Ulli Sima (SPÖ).

Night 30s could come
MA 46 was also ordered to inspect the section of the Himmelstrae between Cobenzlgasse and Gspöttgraben overnight 30. Sima also advocates cross-border cooperation, for example in the form of a database in which speed demons are entered. “However, the most effective measure against particularly serious cases is the seizure of the vehicle,” emphasizes Sima, who hopes for a law that makes this possible.

Priority actions are successful
The priority campaigns on the streets of Vienna are also being expanded. More than 1,600 expert opinions were prepared in 2021 alone. More than 92 percent of the vehicles inspected were found to have serious defects.
