Frenchman Arnaud Jerald has broken the world record freediving for the seventh time. In the “Vertical Blue” competition in the Bahamas, the 26-year-old dived to a depth of 120 meters with one breath. He surpassed his record, which was only set last Friday, by one meter.
“I felt even more pressure today because 120 is a mythical number and not everyone believes you can do it,” the extreme athlete explained after the 3:34 minute dive. “But in the end I was confident, because I’ve trained well and have already set four world records here,” said Jerald.
The Frenchman wins the discipline bi-fins (double fins) with constant weight. The diver may use a weight to overcome his own buoyancy, but must swim back to the surface with the weight.
The Frenchman set his records in the “Vertical Blue” international competition, probably the most renowned competition in the freediving scene. From August 1 to 11, the world’s best free divers gathered at the Deans Blue Hole in the Bahamas. In the competition, each athlete has six attempts per discipline.
