Fire in National Park – German Police Investigate Shisha Smokers

Date:

According to media reports, police are currently investigating four young men in Germany for deliberate arson. They allegedly smoked shisha in the Saxon Switzerland National Park and set fire to the dry forest.

In mid-July, an area of about 2,500 square meters caught fire near the Basteibrug. The fire spread rapidly in the bone-dry forest. Since then, hundreds of emergency services have been fighting the inferno. The dry and hard ground had to be dug up with picks and shovels to combat the embers. According to the current status, the mission with this force will last at least until the end of the week, Thomas Kunz of the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district office said Monday.

In the meantime, however, the investigation into the cause of the fire is in full swing and according to several German media, the police have a common thread. This leads to four men between the ages of 24 and 25. The suspects are said to have ignored the current smoking ban and made themselves comfortable on a viewing platform with a shisha. Photographic evidence comes from the camera of a reporter from the newspaper “Bild” who happened to be passing by at the same time.

Long prison terms threaten
Not least because of the confession, the police were able to track down the young men from Iraq. During house searches, the mobile phones of the suspects were seized, writes bild.de. This may contain further valuable information for the researchers. Incidentally, the suspect risks a prison sentence of one to ten years if convicted of arson.
