A devastating explosion in the southern Indiana town of Evansville on Wednesday afternoon killed three people and injured another. 39 surrounding houses were damaged by the force of the blast. A surveillance camera (video above) captured the moment of the accident.
Photos and aerial photos (see video above) of the accident site show the enormity of the destruction: walls are missing from numerous buildings, the streets are strewn with rubble.
According to American media, eleven of the 39 houses are so badly damaged (photo below) that they can no longer be entered or are no longer habitable for safety reasons.
Local fire chief Mike Connelly told the local newspaper Courier & Press that the explosion had a radius of 30 feet. Most streets in the residential area were temporarily closed due to the rescue operation.
The cause of the explosion is not yet clear
The cause of the massive explosion is still unclear. The investigation would likely be tedious and lengthy, a spokesman for the fire service said.
