Lock necessary – salmonella in the water: duck fiasco in natural pool

Date:

Because too many poultry are looking for cooling in the Kuenringerbad in Dürnstein (Lower Austria), it had to close again this year. There was a risk of germs! The resentment grows.

Not only locals and tourists know the advantages of the idyllic natural swimming pool in Dürnstein in the middle of the Wachau, they have been talking to the animal world for a long time. However, much to the chagrin of human swimmers. Because for the third time this season, the Kuenringerbad had to be closed for a few days. The main pond was again infested with germs. Salmonella has even been discovered recently. These were probably brought in by the numerous ducks who regularly come to cool down there.

Gaping emptiness instead of 300 visitors
Where normally up to 300 visitors are looking to cool down, there was a gaping void despite the perfect weather. It was not until Thursday morning that Mayor Johann Riesenhuber received the long-awaited message. The limits have dropped, the bathroom can be unlocked again.

“Same values as other pools”
But there was no danger to people, as the city manager states: “Because we have an artificial natural swimming pond, we have to meet the same values as other outdoor pools.” Although you can easily do it there with chlorine, those in charge in Dürnstein can usually only wait, because chemistry is taboo here. “We are proud and happy that we have chosen this path, so we have to live with the consequences from time to time,” Riesenhuber takes it sportingly.

“What good is a beautiful natural swimming pool …”
Given the frequent closures this year, not everyone in the city sees it that way. “What good is a beautiful natural pool if we then have to visit the swimming pools in other cities”, the displeasure grows.
