To date, no vaccine in the world has been studied in such detail and at the same time viewed so critically as that against the coronavirus. From the very beginning, some people were skeptical and feared side effects or even consequential damage that the administered vaccines could bring. The preliminary balance: In seven cases in Austria, a link between vaccination and serious consequential damage has been confirmed and a corresponding compensation has been paid.
If there is actually a causal relationship between the vaccination and the occurrence of serious consequences, there is a right to compensation. According to the Ministry of Health, so far in seven cases it has been proven that the vaccination is responsible for the development of heart muscle inflammation (myocarditis) or severe thrombosis. In five cases an average of 1,600 euros was paid, in two cases a limited monthly pension of 900 euros, the Ö1 “Morgenjournal” reported on Friday.
Possible side effects can be reported
If possible side effects of the vaccination are suspected, this can be reported online at any time, for example on the homepage of the BASG (Federal Office for Safety in Health Care). These cases are then investigated and evaluated.
50,000 reports since vaccination began
From the end of 2020 to now, 50,000 reports have been received, with 19 million vaccinations administered. “First of all, we see complaints such as headache, fever, pain at the injection site, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, chills, nausea and dizziness,” says Barbara Tucek of the Austrian Medical Market Authority at AGES. So side effects classified as mild to moderate, the symptoms also disappeared after a short time.
However, there were also reports of serious, even fatal, side effects of the vaccination, Tucek said: “With AstraZeneca it is known that in very, very rare cases, blood clots can occur in the brain and in larger blood vessels in the abdomen associated with a deficiency of platelets.” 15 cases close to vaccination were reported.
“Benefit outweighs”
So far, 400 suspected cases have also been reported in terms of myocardial inflammation, possibly due to the vaccination. “Five of them died,” Tucek said. In one case the “causality has not yet been elucidated, in the other four cases myocarditis is certainly not the cause of death”. Furthermore, the benefit-risk balance of the corona vaccination is being observed and monitored – and “the benefit still outweighs that, there is no doubt about that,” says Tucek.
