About ten days after a mining accident in Mexico that left ten miners trapped, desperate relatives called for the operation to be expanded amid stalled rescue efforts. “The authorities say we have to wait, wait, you have to get them out,” the brother of one of the miners said at a press conference attended by the relatives. “We want help, even if it’s foreign,” he demanded.
According to the Mexican newspaper “El Universal”, the coordinator of the national civil defense, Laura Velázquez, admitted that it was difficult to save the miners.
tunnels under water
At the mine at Sabinas, Coahuila, more than 1,000 kilometers north of Mexico City, there was a landslide and water intrusion on Aug. 3, complicating the search. The tunnel, which is about 60 meters deep, is submerged to a height of about 30 meters, the governor of Coahulia, Miguel Ángel Riquelme, described at the time on the television channel Milenio TV.
“Don’t Give Up Hope”
Five miners managed to get to safety on their own. Three of them have been treated in hospital for injuries. The condition of the other ten friends is unknown. “We must not give up hope,” Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said during his daily press conference in early August.
Mining accidents are common in the Coahuila mining area. In 2006, an explosion at the Pasta de Conchos coal mine in Coahuila killed 65 miners. A year ago, seven miners drowned in a mine after a heavy rainstorm.
