Prominent Russian politician and right-wing populist Vladimir Zhirinovsky has died. The faction leader of the ultra-nationalist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) has died after a long and serious illness, parliament leader Vyacheslav Volodin said in Moscow on Wednesday. Zhirinovsky was 75 years old. The politician, known as a right-wing agitator, had been hospitalized for weeks.
He was considered one of Russia’s most flamboyant politicians – also for his undiplomatic speeches, which he often gave screaming and red-faced. Zhirinovsky has been in Russian politics since 1991 and has run in six presidential elections, most recently in 2018 when he finished third with 5.65 percent. In the early 1990s, his party was the strongest force in the Russian Duma, the parliament then seen as a counterweight to the Russian president. In the period that followed, not only did the Duma fall, but also the LDPR.
Here is a video of a speech:
In Russia, on March 25, there was already a commotion because the death of the politician was accidentally reported. Parliament leader Volodin had denied the report at the time. Now Volodin has confirmed the death in his Telegram channel.
