Archaeologists were amazed when they made a remarkable find during renovation work on Innsbruck Cathedral.
The “Chapel of the 14 Holy Helpers” – previously known only from written sources – was discovered and temporarily uncovered. As reported by ORF Tirol, the researchers also found the crypt of a priest.
Such an elaborate priestly crypt is unusual
The bones were medallions, from which it can be concluded that they are priests. It’s not unusual for a church to have a cemetery – but you didn’t expect such an elaborate priest’s crypt: “We found remains of wood, so we assume that the priests were buried in wooden coffins. Textile remains were also found in the shafts ”, says archaeologist Benjamin Wimmer.
Another mysterious discovery
The researchers also made another mysterious discovery. It is a funnel-shaped shaft of brook stones, in which animal bones have been found. According to excavation director Lucrezia Zaccaro, it is probably food waste with bones from cattle, pigs and also frogs and birds.
According to the archaeologist Johannes Pöll, this discovery is very special: “We expected graves and grave markers, also a chapel, but a building with such an unusual function cannot be found everywhere.” the stairs of the entrance to the cathedral are being redesigned.
