“Fire broke out” – Ammunition depot in Crimea exploded again

Date:

Authorities say another explosion has occurred at a military facility on the Russian-annexed Black Sea peninsula in Crimea. Authorities say an ammunition depot was detonated in the Dschankoy region of northern Crimea on Tuesday morning. Videos on social networks showed a large fire and a cloud of smoke. The head of the Crimean administration Sergei Aksyonov said at the scene that two were injured.

The explosions continued, the Russian-appointed head of government said in a video message to Telegram news channel. “An evacuation is underway and a five-kilometer safety zone is being formed for the safety of residents,” he said. The Ministry of Defence, National Guard and Civil Defense are deployed.

No “serious” injuries
The cause of the explosion is still unclear. The Russian Defense Ministry told RIA Novosti news agency that a “fire broke out” at an ammunition depot. But there were no “serious” injuries. Fire extinguishing measures have been taken and the cause of the fire is being investigated, the ministry said.

According to authorities, the explosion took place in the village of Maiskoye, 25 kilometers south of Dzhankoy, on the site of a former farm used by the Russian armed forces as a storage depot for ammunition. A substation for the power supply is also said to have caught fire.

Ukrainian attack?
Just last week, there were massive explosions at a Russian military base in Crimea, which was annexed in 2014. According to authorities, one person was killed in the explosions at the base in Saki near the seaside town of Nowofyodorovka. There were also 14 injured. Experts believe Ukraine hit the base and destroyed several fighter jets. Kiev has not officially confirmed the attack. Russia, on the other hand, claims that the explosion occurred because of fire safety violations.

Authorities say a Ukrainian drone struck the Russian Black Sea fleet in the port city of Sevastopol on July 31. There were also wounded there.
