The municipality of Langen in Vorarlberg, reports krone.at, is still struggling with a huge water shortage. In the meantime, thanks to numerous volunteers, supplies have been restored, but only in emergency mode. Therefore, the call for urgent water conservation still applies.
Langen near Bregenz has 1,323 inhabitants – each of them checks the weather forecast several times a day. “We hope it will finally rain,” says the municipality when asked by krone.at, but with a wink. The lack of water has ‘suddenly started’. Why exactly is not yet known. “Research is currently underway on the high consumption.”
In any case, the drinking water tanks are now filled again and a representative of the municipality explains that they would like to thank all the helpers and especially the local fire brigade for the great effort that sometimes lasted until the morning hours. The drinking water is currently supplied from surrounding communities and the tanks have been refilled.
Call on the website “I’m serious”
The official appeal on the community’s website had previously sparked excitement and questions at the “Krone”. “Use water ONLY for minor personal hygiene and as drinking water for humans and animals.” Watering the lawn, filling pools, cleaning forecourts or washing the car is “strongly prohibited” until further notice.
“Does that mean you can no longer shower in an Austrian community?” one indignant reader wondered. The municipality now explains to krone.at that a cautious all-clear can now be given. The call, in particular, not to fill swimming pools or wash cars still applies.
The community representative indirectly confirms whether “minor personal hygiene” really meant a “prohibition of showering”. And: You can now take a shower again, “but please don’t take too long!”
Incidentally, it is quite possible that the situation around Bregenz will change quickly – according to the forecasts, up to 150 liters of rain per square meter will fall in the area on Saturday evening. More than 120 liters on Friday alone.
