A dramatic incident occurred on the Tauernautbahn towards Salzburg on Sunday evening: a camper suddenly caught fire while driving. Flames shot out from under the passenger seat. A man from Salzburg suffered serious burns.
The camper was on the Tauernautobahn between Villach-West and Feistritz on Sunday when the fire suddenly broke out. Even before the driver was able to park the vehicle in the emergency lane, heavy smoke developed in the interior and flames began to erupt under the passenger seat.
The passenger suffered severe burns to the lower body and legs. The rescue helicopter RK 1 was alerted to take the injured to the hospital in Graz.
Due to the helicopter landing and the firefighting activities of the Feistritz/Drau fire brigade, the lane in the direction of Salzburg had to be closed. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
