Aena receives the concession for 11 airports in Brazil, the largest international operation

The entity’s president and CEO calls the country’s potential “indisputable”

Aena Desarrollo Internacional SME, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aena, through which it conducts its international activities, has been named the successful bidder by the National Civil Aviation Organization of Brazil for the auction being held for the concession, for a period of 30 years with the possibility of five more years, from 11 Brazilian airports, as reported by the company to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).

Specifically, the award price was 2,450 million Brazilian reals (approximately 468 million euros), to which the disbursement of an additional 1,639 million Brazilian reals (312 million euros) must be added to mandatory commitments, for which the total amount of the operation amounts to 4,089. million Brazilian real (780 million euros).

In this way, it is the largest international operation carried out by Aena to date, with which it operates the largest network of concession airports in Brazil with a network of 17 airports in the country.

The 11 awarded airports accounted for 12% of the traffic of the country of Rio de Janeiro in 2019 and are those of Congonhas, Campo Grande, Uberlândia, Santarém, Marabá, Montes Claros, Carajás, Altamira, Uberaba, Corumbá and Ponta Porã, with The Congon airport is the busiest of the group and the second busiest in Brazil.

The management of these airports involves an obligation to pay a variable fee with a grace period of four years, consisting of a percentage of gross income increasing from 3.23% to 16.15% per annum. The signing of the concession contract is scheduled for February 2023.

According to the planning and studies carried out on the necessary investments, an investment of almost 5,000 million Brazilian reais (954.3 million euros), of which 73% is expected to be made in the first phase of the concession, i.e. until 2028.

Aena’s president and CEO, Maurici Lucena, welcomed this operation. “Brazil’s potential is undeniable. Domestic traffic, for example, has recovered 100%,” he said.

“Despite the difficult times we have been through due to the coronavirus and always prioritizing generating value for public and private shareholders and for employees, we are convinced that the internationalization of Aena is a guarantee for the future,” emphasized he.
