The Belgian government wanted to reassure its citizens after announcing the shutdown of the gas supply to Nord Stream 1. “Russia’s shutdown will have no impact on Belgian supplies,” said the cabinet of Energy Minister Tinne van der Straeten.
His team is closely monitoring the situation, but points out that the country is continuing to replenish its gas reserves at a good pace and hopes they will reach 90% of capacity in the coming days. Norway is Belgium’s main gas supplier, via the Zeepipe submarine gas pipeline. This infrastructure has been fundamental to the supply of gas and has enabled the country to direct that supply to Germany and the Netherlands.
The war in Ukraine changed plans for the Belgian energy transition. The energy mix is currently based on gas – which also arrives in the form of LNG from the ports of Zeebrugge and Dunkirk – and nuclear energy. The country has little capacity to develop renewable energy sources and imports about 75% of the energy it consumes.
