In view of the energy crisis in Europe, which determines the problem, two of the last three nuclear power plants must remain in operation after the turn of the year. Merz wants all power plants to keep running
CDU leader Friedrich Merz had previously demanded continued operation of the three nuclear power plants still on the grid. He described classifying nuclear reactors as emergency reserves as completely inadequate. “Full performance of these power plants on the grid and on the market,” he said before the meeting of the Union’s parliamentary group. The government must also order new fuel rods, so that the nuclear reactors can run for another three to four years.
Electricity is urgently needed. CSU regional head Alexander Dobrindt warns of a blackout in Germany, i.e. a collapse of the power supply, if the reactor is switched off.
Berlin and Paris help each other
French President Emmanuel Macron has now reached an agreement on mutual aid with Berlin in the energy crisis. Paris will be ready to supply Germany with natural gas, Macron said after a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
If necessary, Germany in turn supplies electricity to France. “Germany needs our natural gas and we need electricity from the rest of Europe, especially from Germany.”
