Minister Ribera makes it conditional that each Member State has an adjustment margin
Spain supports the mandatory reduction of electricity consumption, especially during peak hours, one of the measures on the table of the European Commission. This was stated on Tuesday by Teresa Ribera, the government’s third vice president and minister for the ecological transition and the demographic challenge, although she stated the condition that each member state has a margin of adjustment.
“Yes, we are in favor of it, it depends on how this obligation is presented in precise terms and on what margin they give us to the States to adapt it to the fairest and most reasonable way of meeting this obligation” , he defended in an interview on TV3, emphasizing the importance of who, how and when it is applied.
The major concern is whether this will affect the amount consumers pay. In this regard, Ribera emphasized that the cost of each timeslot will decrease in the face of collective savings as less participation of the combined cycle plants will be required. The minister believes that in order to lower the price of the bill, in addition to tackling the decline in consumption, the measures should also be extended to the price of gas. “If we save a lot, but gas is very expensive, then maybe that very expensive gas price is devouring the savings we’ve generated from being very efficient, so we need both,” he said.
For this reason, he insisted on setting a maximum price for the purchase of gas arriving in Europe from third countries and through different routes, and not just from Russia through pipelines, and warned that an inappropriate and unbearable maximum for sellers, suppliers and intermediaries can cause unwanted effects.
