Theft increases – supermarkets already supply meat and butter

Date:

In the wake of inflation and the explosion of costs, the prices of daily groceries are also rising. Since the end of August, German supermarkets such as Lidl and Edeka have even been protecting butter and meat with alarm stickers. Retail companies are thus responding to increasing theft in the price wave. But what about Austria and what are the consequences for thieves? A fact check.

Theft protections on cognac, champagne & co are nothing new, but now retail chains are apparently reacting a bit more nervously to inflation getting out of hand. The discounter Lidl made a start in some German federal states and gave the butter “Kerrygold” an anti-theft sticker, among other things. Also steaks, minced meat or products from luxury lines are on the menu. It says “Secure Item” with the words “Remove label before heating” below it. The protest from the customers was not long in coming.
